BATES COLLEGE

The Department of Geology at Bates College invites applications for two replacement positions, beginning fall 2012. The successful candidates must demonstrate potential for teaching excellence in a vigorous undergraduate program, welcome the opportunity for close interaction with serious students in a senior thesis advisory role, and share with other members of the department responsibility for General-Education courses. Field-based and laboratory projects, and collaboration with departmental colleagues offer a wide range of instructional opportunities.

One position (R2391) is a one-year sabbatical replacement position in structural geology. The successful candidate will teach an introductory course in plate tectonics/field geology, a sophomore/junior level course in structural geology, and a 5 week field/lab course in an area of their own expertise. Facilities include a staff-supported Imaging and Computing Center, GIS and mobile GIS capabilities, and a structure laboratory. The other position (R2392) is for a one-semester teaching position for fall 2012. The successful candidate will teach an introductory course with laboratory in solid earth geology emphasizing plate tectonics and tectonic hazards. A full-time departmental assistant in instruction provides logistical support for the introductory laboratories.

Completion, or near completion, of a PhD in the earth sciences is required for both positions. Review of applications begins February 15 and will continue until the positions are filled. Applicants should submit electronically, in PDF format, to academicservices@bates.edu a cover letter, curriculum vitae, a statement on teaching, and graduate school transcripts. Applicants are also encouraged to submit course syllabi and teaching evaluations. Applicants should arrange for three letters of recommendation to be sent to the email address above, in PDF or Word format. Please include your last name and either GEO R2391 or GEO R2392 in the subject line of all submissions.

Bates College and the Geology Department are committed to increasing the diversity of the campus community and the curriculum. Candidates who can contribute to this goal are encouraged to apply and to identify their strengths and experiences in this area.
