VISITING ASSISTANT PROFESSOR OF GEOLOGY
The Department of Geology at Bucknell University, Lewisburg, PA, invites applications for an entry-level, visiting assistant professor position in Geology for the fall semester of 2012. Ph.D. or ABD required. Qualified applicants for this visiting position will have no more than four years of full-time postdoctoral teaching experience at the time of appointment. Successful applicants will demonstrate an interest in and potential for teaching and interacting effectively with students having a range of backgrounds, interests, and perspectives and an ability to collaborate effectively with colleagues from a range of backgrounds, interests, and perspectives. Familiarity with Appalachian geology is desirable.
This one-semester position will teach two historical geology lecture sections and two accompanying lab sections. Historical geology is taught at the introductory level and serves both majors and non-majors. Each section is capped at 24 students.
The Geology Department offers B.A. and B.S. degrees in Geology and Environmental Geology. Bucknell's geology program is field intensive and we expect candidates to make use of local Appalachian field opportunities for labs in the course.

ASSISTANT PROFESSOR
The Missouri University of Science and Technology Department of Geological Sciences and Engineering invites applications for a full-time tenure-track position at the assistant professor level in Geology and Geophysics in the area of Neotectonics, Remote-Sensing, and Geodynamics to begin September, 2012. PETROGRAPHER/CONSULTANT
Simpson Gumpertz & Heger (SGH) is actively recruiting an experienced candidate for a position as Petrographer/Consultant in our Waltham, MA office. SGH is a nationally known civil and structural engineering firm that works in all aspects of design, investigation, and rehabilitation of structures. At SGH, petrographers provide front-line collaborative support to our investigative teams as well as for external clients, including other engineering firms. The successful candidate will work on investigations of concrete, masonry, stone, and related construction materials.
Applicants should have at least 10 years of experience with stone and concrete petrography; meet the requirements of ASTM C856 and C295; and understand the use of supplemental testing and analytical techniques such as XRD, IR, SEM/EDS, and chemical testing. Exceptional communication skills, experience in research and investigations, and a demonstrated ability for managing and developing staff are also required skills.

ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENTIST
Bard College seeks an environmental scientist for a full-time position on the Faculty of the Bard Center for Environmental Policy (Bard CEP). This position is for a three-year term, renewable upon review for successive three-year terms. Responsibilities include teaching a year-long course in environmental science in the M.S. degree program in Environmental Policy, along with one additional course each year. Other responsibilities include advising Master’s theses and serving on faculty committees.
The science sequence is part of a modular, integrated core curriculum with concurrent courses in environmental economics and environmental policy and law. A commitment to interdisciplinary teaching is essential. Bard CEP trains leaders in environmental policy, with the knowledge to assess and advance sustainable practices in resource management, agriculture, economic policy, and business. Faculty members in CEP are expected to be actively engaged in research and other professional activities appropriate to a graduate program in environmental policy.

CORPORATE PRESIDENT, DOSECC
DOSECC, a not-for-profit corporation that provides scientific and logistical leadership to the continental scientific drilling community, is seeking a corporate President. DOSECC is an implementing organization for continental scientific drilling, headquartered in Salt Lake City, whose mission is to advise, plan, facilitate and execute drilling, subsurface sampling, and monitoring operations that pursue topics of scientific and societal importance.
The President’s duties include recognizing and utilizing opportunities in scientific drilling, providing support for scientific drilling proposals and operations, overseeing revenue generation, setting of business objectives, and supervising corporate offices, accounts, drillers, and equipment. Key objectives of the President are to foster and maintain (1) proactive and ongoing interaction with funding agencies (especially the National Science Foundation, other US government agencies and the International Continental Scientific Drilling Program), and (2) effective communication with stakeholders, including 53 corporate member institutions and the broader continental scientific drilling community.
The President also manages DES, a wholly owned for-profit subsidiary that supports DOSECC by providing equipment, trained scientific drilling teams, and operational support. Experience managing and administering multiple grants and contracts from government agencies is required. A Ph.D. in geosciences or geoengineering, and relevant business and/or academic executive management experience is desired. The successful candidate will provide imaginative leadership for the corporation as a facility of continental scientific drilling and for the broader continental scientific community at large.

BATES COLLEGE
The Department of Geology at Bates College invites applications for two replacement positions, beginning fall 2012. The successful candidates must demonstrate potential for teaching excellence in a vigorous undergraduate program, welcome the opportunity for close interaction with serious students in a senior thesis advisory role, and share with other members of the department responsibility for General-Education courses. Field-based and laboratory projects, and collaboration with departmental colleagues offer a wide range of instructional opportunities.
One position (R2391) is a one-year sabbatical replacement position in structural geology. The successful candidate will teach an introductory course in plate tectonics/field geology, a sophomore/junior level course in structural geology, and a 5 week field/lab course in an area of their own expertise. Facilities include a staff-supported Imaging and Computing Center, GIS and mobile GIS capabilities, and a structure laboratory. The other position (R2392) is for a one-semester teaching position for fall 2012. The successful candidate will teach an introductory course with laboratory in solid earth geology emphasizing plate tectonics and tectonic hazards. A full-time departmental assistant in instruction provides logistical support for the introductory laboratories.

U.S. GEOLOGICAL SURVEY - SENIOR SCIENCE ADVISOR FOR EARTHQUAKE AND GEOLOGIC HAZARDS RESTON, VIRGINIA - SENIOR LEVEL (SL) POSITION
The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) seeks candidates for the full-time position of Senior Science Advisor for Earthquake and Geologic Hazards. This is a SL position with a salary range of $119,554 - $165,300 per annum. This announcement closes on February 21, 2012.
The Senior Advisor for Earthquake and Geologic Hazards is responsible for planning and implementing monitoring, assessment and research activities supported by the Earthquake Hazards, Global Seismographic Network, and Geomagnetism Program. The incumbent will advise the Associate Director for Natural Hazards across a wide range of geologic hazard issues and ensure that the geologic hazard focused programs within the Mission Area are fully collaborating. The incumbent will also provide consultation for senior officials of the Department, other Federal and State agencies, universities, and private-sector organizations regarding highly controversial and sensitive issues. The leader of the USGS earthquake activities is one of the highest visibility positions at this bureau. When disaster strikes, the world turns to USGS for answers, and this SL position will be tasked with coordination of the USGS response, high-level briefings for White House, FEMA, DOI and other government leaders, and international entities. This individual also serves as a primary spokesperson with national media.
To be considered, you must have specialized experience that is directly related to the duties described above, and you must meet the education requirements for the one of the following job series:
Physical Sciences- applicant must possess a degree in physical science, engineering, or mathematics that included 24 semester hours in physical science and/or related engineering science such as mechanics, dynamics, properties of materials, and electronics.
Geophysics-applicant must possess a degree that included at least 30 semester hours in mathematics (including calculus) and the physical sciences (geophysics, physics, engineering, geology, astronomy, meteorology, electronics, etc.).
Geology- applicant must possess a degree in geology plus 20 additional semester hours in any combination of mathematics, physics, chemistry, biological science, structural, chemical, civil, mining or petroleum engineering, computer science, planetary geology, comparative planetology, geophysics, meteorology, hydrology, oceanography, physical geography, marine geology and cartography.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: The minimum qualifications for disciplines on this list is a Master’s in geology, geophysics, earth sciences, meteorology, oceanography, or paleontology OR Bachelor’s in geology AND Master’s in geography, physics, or geochemistry OR the equivalent* OR possession of an appropriate valid California Community College Credential authorizing service in the specified subject area(s).
